2008-sep-16 PLEASE READ THIS !!!

I've spent several hours on cleaning up this thread and I got it from over 800 posts down to 135. So from now on I would appreciate if you all think before you post. You don't always have to make a new post, sometimes it's better to use the Edit button on your last post. Only post requests or textures, don't start discussions and stuff, they will get deleted asap anyway.

2007-dec-04
Updated the guides below to version 1.07 final of the game.
Please let me know if I got something wrong, if images or links stops working or whatever so that I can update the guide.

Now that we can make our own fancy ball textures I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread only for that. So please post your ball textures in this post.

How to make ball textures

1. Launch your favorite painting software Adobe Photoshop (expensive), Paintshop Pro (less expensive), GIMP (free), Paint.NET (free), or whatever that can save images in the JPEG format. I DON'T recommend using Microsoft Paint that come with Windows, it works but it's very limited.

2. Create a new 512x512 pixel image and paint whatever you want, but remember the game cuts away most of the texture when it is applied to the ball. It's only the areas shown as green and red on the image below that is actually shown on the ball in game.

You can save the image above and use it as a guide to paint upon, or download it as a Photoshop template (with holes included) from here, instead of starting with a new blank image. Might be a good idea unless you really know what you are doing.

It's no problem if you paint outside the green/red, it just won't show up on the ball in the game. So if you plan to add logos and stuff then place them inside the green or red areas, that way they won't get cut. Don't forget the small areas at the right edge of the image or it might show up as a dot or think line on the ball.

3. When you are done painting you save the image as JPEG (.jpg) and please pick a good informative unique name.

How to use ball textures

NEW June 01 2008 - Video tutorial
If you don't want to read all the steps below you can watch mets4life3064's video tutorial instead. You find it in here.

1. Save or copy the image you want to use to the ball_textures folder located inside your Bowling Evolution folder. This is why it's important to pick a good unique name for your textures so it won't overwrite the default or other users textures.

2. Now you must add the texture to the list of balls you can select inside the game by editing the balls.conf file located in the subfolder config inside your Bowling Evolution folder. Open balls.conf with Windows WordPad. I don't recommend Notepad because the line breaks can get messed up, making it a lot harder to do the next step.
At WordPad's Open File dialogue box where it sais "Files of Type" you propably must change to "All Documents (*.*)" or you won't find the files you want to edit.

3. In the balls.conf file you will see that each ball in the game got a few rows of variables that tells the game what it needs to know about each ball. Each ball look something like this.

ballconfig_item {
name = "Basic"
weight = 14
texture = "ball_textures/flame2.jpg"
minfrictionfactor = 0.02
maxfrictionfactor = 0.32
}

What you have to do is to select and copy the rows from ONE ball and paste it at the bottom of the file, that adds a new ball to the list inside the game.

Now you change the row "name" of the new ball to whatever you want your new ball to be called inside the game.

Next you change the row "texture" to the filename of the texture you want to use for the new ball (the one you saved/copied to your ball_textures folder earlier). If this row doesn't match one of the filenames in the ball_textures folder the ball will be all white in the game.

You can also change the rows "weight", "minfrictionfactor" (how early it will hook) and "maxfrictionfactor" (how much it will hook). If you don't change them it will behave exactly the same as the ball you copied the variables from.

4. Save the file, overwrite the old one if asked, and close WordPad.

5. Launch the game and enjoy your new ball!

How to share ball textures

We all wan't to see your masterpiece so don't forget to post it here! :D

1. You can use the free service from ImageShack to host your image.

2. Click on the "Browse" button, search for and select your image file.

3. Click on the "host it!" button.

4. You will be presented with several different ways to link to your image, use the second one called "Thumbnail for forums (1)". Copy the long text in the box and paste it in your post in this thread.

How I make textures using Photoshop

I thought I should write down the steps I usually do in Photoshop when making a ball texture. Perhaps theres a few tricks other photoshopers haven't thought of or perhaps you have some to share with me. I don't explain exactly how each tool work but most of them is pretty simple to figure out, just play around with them. I sometimes have to take other steps and/or use other tools but in general this is how.

1. I open the image of the ball that I downloaded from some website. The ball manufacturers, Bowlers Paradise or whatever.

2. I make a perfect circle selection a few pixels smaller than the ball to get a nice edge.

3. I copy the selection to a new layer

4. I fill the background layer with white color, I find it easier to work that way.

5. I use the Shadow/highlight adjustment (shadow 0% highlights 100%) on the ball layer.

6. I repeat step 5 if needed untill I've reduced the shadow/highlight areas.

7. I use the Dodge and Burn tools to further adjust shadows/highlights untill the texture looks flat.

8. If the edges don't blend in with the rest of the ball (often they are very dark and may show a dark line around the ball in the game) I make a new circle selection a few pixels smaller than the ball, invert it and delete the edges.

9. I make a copy of the ball layer (for the back side) and hide that layer for now.

10. On the front side layer you often need to shrink the logo or it will look huge in the game. Depending on how the logo look I use either step 11a or 11b to reduce it.

11a. Open the Liquify filter and play around with the Warp and Plucker tools, takes some practise but it's lot of fun to play with on a portrait of a friend so you can practise a lot. :D

11b. Use the Lasso tool around the logo and copy it to a new layer. Use transform/scale to reduce its size, remember to maintain the aspect ratio. Merge the 2 layers. If you reduced the size a lot parts of the old logo may show outside the new one so you have to remove them by using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools.

12. Now the front side is done so hide it for now and select/show the layer with the back side.

13. Use the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools again to remove the entire logo. Now you should have pretty much a copy of the front but without the logo which is kind of boring, we want the back to look a little different.

14. Again open up the Liquify filter and play around with Warp and whatever tools you find useful. Don't change the area closest to the edge of the ball as we want it to be round and look the same on both side, that way they will blend together in the game.

15. Flip the back layer vertical.

16. Now I load my blank template, download link available earlier in this post.

17. I copy both front and back layers that I've made above to the template and place the new layers between the guide and fingers layers.

18. Now I resize front and back layer to 262x262 pixels and center the layers above the two "halves" of the ball. I usually place the front on top and back on bottom but it doesnt matter.

19. I actually cut the 2 columns of pixels furthest to the left (that would have gone outside the image) and place them furtest to the right of the image. I recall it made a difference in an earlier version of BE (you would get a thin white line around the ball if you didn't) but I'm not sure it is like that any more. So perhaps you can skip this step.

20. Now I check if there are any obvious mirrored patterns around the edges. If there are they will look kind of bad in the game so I use Clone Stamp tool and Healing Brush tool to remove such patterns on either the front or back side of the ball.

21. Since on of the halves overlap the other in where they meet in the middle of the image I use Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tool again to remove any visible edge in that area.

22. If you want a manufacturer logo or something you copy it to a new layer and resize it so it look good. If you haven't removed the "background" around that logo earlier you have to do it now. Easiest way is to add a layer mask to the logo layer and paint away the background around the logo.

23. Fill the background layer with the color that best match most of the areas around that balls edge. This is not necessary if you made everything correct but in case you made the halves a little to small, or perhaps the devs change the way the texture is applied in the game, there won't be an ugly bright white line around the ball but a line of a color that blends in well with the ball.

24. Turn off or delete the guide layer.

25. Play around with the Hue/Saturatin and Brightness/contrast adjustments on the thumb and fingers layers untill you got the color you want on the holes.

26. Save/export the image as a JPEG. Don't close photoshop.

27. Add the ball to the game and test it. Throw it as slow as possible with just a little forward or Z-spin. After the camera zoom in on the ball paus the game every now and then and look for any ugly errors on the texture. If their isn't a single error the first time then congrats! You are better than me at making balltextures and can skip step 28. :D

28. Go back to photoshop, fix errors, save, add to game, check again, repeat untill everything is perfect!

29. Save the photoshop image in case you want to go back and fix something later.

I'll keep all my textures in this post instead of spreading them all over the forum.

Feel free to use them as you want but I really appreciate if you don't post them anywhere else and/or try to take credit for them.

Hey guys...

New to the forum, and the game so I thought I'd start out here by making a few balls. I'm a big VBP fan (Visionary Bowling Products) so I made my favorite ball. The Violet Gargoyle. I kinda mooched off of Vankis's templates in his first post for the finger holes (sorry) because I don't have a program like PSP7 or anything right now so I just used paint to do it all. But I'll get to that in the future. Here ya go though.. :)

Enjoy, and I will be doing some more in the future when I have time. Here is what I have lined up so far...

Thanks for the comments Vankis.

2nd attempt is the Frankie May Signature Gryphon. I got ahold of a camera/photo program and I was using it to resize the images to the template. I found a color function to where I can add tent of different colors to the picture, so I took the G-3 (pearl) picture with the gryphon on it and made it slightly brighter so it matches the color red of the Signature Gryphon picture.. This way I can get both images on the ball (like the real one). Sweet looking in game as it comes together nicely, I thought it would be lighter on one half than the other but its not...

Also, if you want a definition of Skid/Snap as your ball reaction, these ball specs make it your tool. I'll attach a replay (stock in game pattern). Enjoy...

I used photoshop to create this and used another members finger holes, so thanks for that.

I have been playing around with the numbers and I GOT IT!!

I use the SHARP oil pattern and the numbers below work great on it....i have seen a few flaws with the other bowling balls that they seem to just jump....so i decided to make the ball really long and really snappy and it has worked great.......... :D

name = "Columbia 300 Resurgence"

I disagree with these number because a ball with that much length with that much backend is just not possible. 1st, the sharp pattern is not normal, in fact, you probably shouldn't use it for testing balls. Use a typical league pattern, it will render more accurate results. 2nd, the Resurgence is a powerful ball, but your numbers are lopsided. I think it should be something like this:

ballconfig_item {
name = "Columbia 300 Resurgence"
weight=16
texture="ball_textures/resurgencepm4.jpg"
minfrictionfactor = 0.027
maxfrictionfactor = 0.76
